Kitchen Alchemy

Who doesn't need some Umami paste or Inca Dust to charge up one's spice rack? I'm absolutely in love with the whole concept and exotic ingredients of Easy Tasty Magic created by food writer Laura Santtini. The Easy Tasty Magic collection of taste-enhancers stimulates the senses, both with modern and original flavor combos and beautifully clever approaches to packaging. Shown from top: Umami Paste, Alchemical Larder w/16 rubs & spices, a little vial of Inca Stardust (bitter chocolate, burnt orange and chili), White Mischief Rub (smoked China tea, jasmine, orange flowers, Facing Heaven chili & peppercorns). There are also Food Bling Mixed Metals, sprays and salts in the collection as well. All available online at Selfridges.com.

Nomad Spray

Karim Rashid has teamed up with Kenzo to create these sleek airline-friendly, pocket-sized nomad sprays that fit in the palm of your hand. The Ryoko (which means travel in Japanese) sprays come in 5 scents and are available at KenzoUSA. The modern organic shape is very appealing both to hold and to look at. Nicely done.

Summer Collection

Coca-Cola just unveiled a limited edition of their hot new summer look for their cans. My favorite is the logos as heat on the grill. Refreshing packaging design.

Nice Package

Calvin Klein will launch three limited edition fragrances for spring 2009. I really dig the type treatment on the CK One & CK Be “we are one” bottles of the iconic scents, decorated with the words "we are one" written in various languages. Slated to launch in February, they will include a MP3 player-compatible speaker to tie in with the idea of music as the universal language.

Talking Packages

Just wonderful and imaginative packaging design for this special edition version of Brian Eno and David Byrne’s Everything That Happens Will Happen Today album. Sagmeister Inc. designed this special issue of Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. It comes packaged in a round tin with a little house on it. Remove the lid and a chip within plays the sound of some hammering followed by the sound of a creaking door to reveal a grassy-looking disc containing the album. Underneath is a similar looking disc that contains a short film about the album by Hillman Curtis, a miniature hardbound book, a small capsule and a dice.

Dangerous Brew
Unfortunately hard liquor just doesn't agree with me, I’m much more of a red wine lover. But oh how I wish I drank something as mysterious and legendary as absinthe. This beautiful bottle design from Pandor says it all.

TCHO Me
TCHO, a newly launched fair-trade bean-to-chocolate bar company is located on historic Pier 17 in San Francisco. The company was founded by former space shuttle technologist, Timothy Childs, who launched it with Louis Rossetto, co-founder of Wired magazine. TCHO (the name is a combo of “technology” and a nickname for chocolate), has launched "beta" versions of their product and then invites the community to provide feedback to help them perfect it. Three different bars with different notes, (not actual nuts or fruit) Nutty, Fruity & Chocolately are available online here. Love the whole idea behind this and the simple packaging .

A Message of Peace, Freedom & Love
Love how the numeral 2 looks as if it's scratched (look carefully, it’s subtle) on the surface overlaying the copy on Comme des Garcons limited edition CdG#2 "Silver Words" … available for pre-order at Blackbird. "Words contain meanings like a bottle holds a perfume. Both convey messages that can be interpreted and experienced in an immense variety of different ways, each of them communicates an essence, a thought, a shared experience. Messages in bottles have always signified belief and a hope for the future. Using advanced serigraphic techniques, evolved from traditional printing methods, the original Comme des Garcons 2 pebble-shaped bottle has been lacquered in black to contain silver words of peace, freedom and love in several languages. The result is a deep, matt-black colour surface holding an infinate message of hope, stamped in silver words."
