Around this time of year I start day dreaming about booking a flight to Hawaii, imagining how good the sun would feel on my skin after months of cold, rainy days and how much I want winter to just be over with. Luckily, living in Southern California offers another respite from the cold in near-by Palm Springs. On February 12th, The Ace Hotel and Swim Club opens in Palm Springs and gives me a reason to book a room in the next few months. Embracing the laid-back feel of Palm Springs, L.A.-based design team Commune worked with Ace to create interiors that evoke an indulgent camping experience. Walls are covered with tent-like drapes and include slats that encourage guests to personalize rooms with photos or artwork. Vintage furnishings make each room feel hand-crafted and utterly unique. Rich natural materials used in the rooms include bleached canvas, wormy butternut wood, denim, and hemp—all in line with Ace’s hybrid goal of comfort and sustainability. Guests will also be treated to quirky amenities like tamale carts and a sno-cone bar. Great rates starting at $89 a night.
If I ever need to go to to San Francisco my hotel of choice will be Hotel Vertigo. The landmark site of a famous scene at the Empire Hotel in Hitchcock's film Vertigo, this recently renovated boutique hotel is designed with flair and an amusing nod to the color palette of Saul Bass’ famous poster for the film. I LOVE those custom orange wingback chairs with VERTIGO screened on the seats!
Mama Shelter, a new 172 room hotel in Paris has just opened. This imaginative,very chic and delightful hotel was designed by Philipe Starck and created by the Trigano family (co-founders of Club Med) with French philosopher Cyril Aouizerate. With five different sized rooms, the hotel has fabulously designed common areas, a fun bar, a restaurant and lots of art. Love the slightly sinister bedside lamps made from masks. Those tribal chairs are pretty stunning too.
