Urban Escape

What a delight this must be to happen upon while strolling! Artists Benoit Deseille and Benedetto Bufalino's installation Urban Escape transforms a phone booth into a street aquarium as part of the Lyon Light Festival in France. A statement from the artists: “With the advent of the mobile telephone, telephone booths lie unused. We rediscover this glass cage transformed into an aquarium, full of exotically coloured fish; an invitation to escape and travel.” Fantastic re-imagining of materials and presentation of urban street art.

Soft Art for the Sofa

I’ve posted before about the fabulous pillows over at Bonjour Mon Coussin but somehow missed these beautiful typographic accent pillows when browsing the site. Love, love these.

Ace in the Desert

Around this time of year I start day dreaming about booking a flight to Hawaii, imagining how good the sun would feel on my skin after months of cold, rainy days and how much I want winter to just be over with. Luckily, living in Southern California offers another respite from the cold in near-by Palm Springs. On February 12th, The Ace Hotel and Swim Club opens in Palm Springs and gives me a reason to book a room in the next few months. Embracing the laid-back feel of Palm Springs, L.A.-based design team Commune worked with Ace to create interiors that evoke an indulgent camping experience. Walls are covered with tent-like drapes and include slats that encourage guests to personalize rooms with photos or artwork. Vintage furnishings make each room feel hand-crafted and utterly unique. Rich natural materials used in the rooms include bleached canvas, wormy butternut wood, denim, and hemp—all in line with Ace’s hybrid goal of comfort and sustainability. Guests will also be treated to quirky amenities like tamale carts and a sno-cone bar. Great rates starting at $89 a night.

Obamicon Yourself

Express yourself by creating an Obamicon of your own chosen image in a style inspired by Shepard Fairey’s iconic poster. Make yours right here, so easy and kind of fun & silly.

Objects of Desire

Great. Now I have found yet another chair I covet and have no room or budget for, but how beautiful is this Dharma chair? The Camus floor lamp is mighty fine as well. From Palette Industries, check out their blog too!

Talking Packages

Just wonderful and imaginative packaging design for this special edition version of Brian Eno and David Byrne’s Everything That Happens Will Happen Today album. Sagmeister Inc. designed this special issue of Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. It comes packaged in a round tin with a little house on it. Remove the lid and a chip within plays the sound of some hammering followed by the sound of a creaking door to reveal a grassy-looking disc containing the album. Underneath is a similar looking disc that contains a short film about the album by Hillman Curtis, a miniature hardbound book, a small capsule and a dice.

The Birds Barbie

Like most girls growing up, I had a Barbie doll. I loved how modern and chic she was and the tiny clothes & accessories were the best part. To celebrate the film The Birds’ 45th anniversary, Mattel has released The Birds Barbie doll, which is based off the ill-fated heroine Tippi Hedren, who fashioned a green skirt suit during one of the movie’s iconic scenes. This absolutely made me roar with laughter and I’m afraid I really need one to display as artwork, plus you’ve got to love the birds attached to her clothes and hair. When I was growing up here in L.A., I lived across the street from two red-headed neighbor kids that were child actors. Their big claim to fame was they were featured as children getting attacked by birds in the movie. Available here for $55.75.

Oral Fixation

I am so tempted to try these maple/bacon lollipops from Lollyphile. A favorite taste sensation of mine is sweet and savory salty. Lollyphile is a San Francisco-based candy company started back in 2007 when they found themselves with a lot of absinthe and no candy. One thing led to another and they launched with their Absinthe Lollipops (no you can't get wasted on the candy, no alcohol is in final product). Modern sweets for the urbanite!

A Message in Ice

Gold Shop Series- Water Is The New Gold from BighARTGold on Vimeo. Dirt and ice with a message, so clever!

Fashioned by Fairies

I just discovered this amazing source for very wearable jewelry from the NY Times. The treasures in Peter Adler’s Pebble London’s space is a fashionista's paradise, stocked with exotic and colorful necklaces, bangles, rings, earrings and decorative objects. Most of the pieces are made with beads, faceted stones, seeds, pearls, wood, shells and metal. The shop luckily is now online and you could spend hours going through all the pieces. I love the bracelet shown above, it looks as if it was made by fairies from bits of silk and found jewelry parts in the forest. I’m really loving the tribal looking studded cuffs too.

Branding the President

The Barack Obama Inaugural Committee is releasing an official inauguration poster designed by famed street artist Shepard Fairey, the print, created especially for the 2009 Inauguration, boldly declares "BE THE CHANGE." The image will be available on buttons, lapel pins, stickers and t-shirts. The poster will officially be released tomorrow on the Inaugural Committee's online store. I never picked up one of Fairey’s campaign posters, so this might be the one for me.

Powerfully Clear

What possibilities this new transparent concrete will have on architecture! Created by Mexican students Joel Sosa and Sergio Omar Galván, it is 30% lighter than normal concrete and lets through 80% of the light. Wow!

Word Explosion

I can’t imagine the work it took to create these astounding type mobile sculptures. The vision of Brooklyn based artist Ebon Heath is just magical. These images are from an exhibition at the Carte Blanche Gallery in London of his work Stereo.type, a typographic ballet. Grown in opposition to urban noise created through advertising mediums in the modern day landscape, Stereo.type explodes the written word.
